Day 8: Sat 4 Jun - Tata to Esztergom

Ride: 70km
Max temp: 35 deg C

This place has more churches than Adelaide!

Couldn't get breakfast till 0800 which resulted in a late start. Just getting out of Tatar was a chore due to the lack of signs, both street and directions. Maybe a hangover from the communist days??

In order to avoid heavy traffic we had to take the back roads, which just happen to be through the mountains - a 7, 10 and even one 12deg gradient were the order of the day. Needless to say we are all a little weary this arvo as it took all day to do the 'short' ride. Never mind we will all sleep well.

Esztergom (which is on the Danube, we are back on the river after a diversion) is known as Hungary's Rome and has the largest Basilica in the country.  It has a 13 x 6.5m painting based on the Ascension of Mary which is in Venice. The town has been settled since the Stone Age. Dinner was the most wonderful Goulash I have ever tasted.
