Day 13: Thu 9 Jun - Rackeve to Kalocsa

Ride: 100km

It was hard to leave the Palace this morning, one quickly gets used to living like a Prince in the lap of luxury. The folk dancing was an unexpected bonus. After breakfast in the garden we headed out along Hwy 51, which was fairly busy but you never felt unsafe. That is due in the main to the extreme care European motorists take when driving near cyclists.

Initially we were a little apprehensive about the distance to be covered but half way into the ride we realized that it wouldn't be too bad. It was flat and we had a nice tail wind most of the day. And although it was cloudy all day we didn't get any rain. Average speed was 18.9 k/hr and it took from 0900 to 1500 with plenty of breaks to refuel or top up the coffee levels. Besides the riding conditions the scenery was excellent, with quaint villages (in a typical Hungarian way - rustic sort of) and lush green fields of all sorts of crops. Had a great feed of cherries straight off the tree, big juicy black ones.  The tree was just in the street of one of the villages.

The place we are staying is a lovely old Motel / Health & Beauty Spar. The Europeans love their health spars. So I expect to ride away in the morning feeling 20 years younger and looking beeeeautiful. No comments from the peanut gallery are necessary thank you. I'm not holding my breath for any noticeable improvement. Tomorrow is our last full day in Hungary.

Typical Hungarian house, complete with veggie garden
